Epson ink cartridge refill - to fill or not to fill?

An Epson ink cartridge refill may not be as easy to do as most other brands of inkjet cartridge. Generally speaking inkjet cartridges can be refilled up to 4 or 5 times before the cartridge needs replacing. However, the Epson inkjet cartridge presents specific challenges that may make an ink refill more difficult than its worth.

There are two main reasons why the Epson ink cartridge refill is difficult to do.

  • Most Epson inkjet cartridges have a smart chip that needs to be reset after refilling. Otherwise, the cartridge will inform the printer that the cartridge is still empty and won't allow the printer to function.
  • The Epson inkjet cartridge has a porous sponge like material in the cartridge which expands as the ink is depleted from the cartridge making it very difficult to refill with ink.

The first problem regarding an Epson ink cartridge refill can be overcome by using a smart chip resetter made specifically for Epson inkjet cartridges. The resetter informs the smart chip that the cartridge is full and can once again be used as though it was new.

The second problem is much more difficult to overcome. To do it right you need to use a vacuum pump which will displace the air and allow the inkjet cartridge to fill properly with ink.

Unless you have the necessary experience, patience, equipment and aptitude, an Epson ink cartridge refill may not be a viable option for you.

There are, however, other Epson ink cartridge replacement options available. In the end you need to weigh the cost benefit of each and decide which best fits your particular circumstance.
