Replacement ink cartridge - when spending less means getting more
Replacement ink cartridges aren't suppose to cost more than the printer. Yet that's precisely too often the case with inkjet and laser printers. Printer manufacturers understand that the reoccurring profits made from the sale of printer consumables, such as ink cartridges, are where the big profits are made.
Printer manufacturers attempt to persuade customers into purchasing brand name cartridges and justify the high cost of brand name ink cartridges claiming they are superior to the competitions' compatible cartridges. That may have been true in the past but not anymore.
There are two kinds of compatible ink cartridges:
- New cartridges built to the specifications of OEM cartridges. These cartridges are made to compete with the best brand name cartridges available. They are usually made of recycled materials in order to keep costs down.
- Remanufactured cartridges that originally started out as original cartridges that have been cleaned, worn components replaced and then refilled again with ink. The same cartridge can normally be reused 3 to 5 times before it's lifespan has been exceeded. Compatibles that have the print head incorporated into the cartridge, like Lexmark and HP, are usually remanufactured cartridges.
