Laser printer toner cartridge quality varies depending on the category of cartridge you use
Manufacturers obviously like to claim that their laser printer toner cartridge is the best on the market. Truth is, however, that quality between new cartridges is fairly consist since manufacturing processes and standards don't vary all that much from one manufacturer to the next.
The difference between laser printer cartridges are primarily with remanufactured toner cartridges and has more to do with the category or type of toner cartridge used.
There are four main types or categories of laser cartridge listed in order of cartridge quality:
- New OEM cartridge.
- Remanufactured cartridge using all new materials
- Remanufactured or reconditioned cartridges with some new parts
- Drill-and-fill
The highest quality printer toner cartridge is an OEM or new cartridge. However, some remanufactured cartridges deliver quality and performance comparable to an OEM cartridge by using all new materials.
Most reconditioned cartridges only contain some parts that may be new. For example, the cartridge may contain a new drum which would deliver excellent quality or it may contain a used drum and other used parts which would deliver good quality but fall short of OEM cartridge standards.
Used laser toner cartridges that have been refilled with fresh toner by drilling a hole, filling the cartridge and then resealing the hole have the worst quality. This practice is called drill-and-fill. They may be the cheapest toner cartridges on the market but their quality is sub par compared to the other types of cartridges mentioned above. Fortunately not many companies exist today that use this method of remanufacturing toner cartridge.
